Feature Friday!

Well, the first week of Stashtacular! is over, but we’ve got 3 awesome weeks ahead, so make sure you come back for next week’s giveaway of a jelly roll from Fat Quarter Shop and 3 more tutorials!

Sarah at Fairy Face Designs shared her Kaleidoscope blocks – don’t they look fabulous?

Suburbs Mama shared a tutorial for making this Shabby Apple inspired dress.

Cindy from Fluffy Sheep Quilting tried out some groovy arrangements for some sweet looking blocks she made.

Suzy’s Artsy Craftsy Sitcom shared a tutorial for making a sweet little quilled butterfly in a jar.

Erin from Bittle Bear shared her orange quilt – I love that the swap was named The Blockwork Orange! Ha!

The gals at Craft Buds shared a tutorial for a cute sewing machine cover – man I need to make one of these!

If you’d like a button, they’re up there on the left sidebar for you to copy and paste the html code :)

Right – I’m off to try to teach myself some new knitting stitches. And there are still 2 places left in Sew Bee Blissful if you’re interested!

Manic Monday + Stashtacular! Tute and Giveaway!

Woohoo! It’s arrived, finally!

Stashtacular

My friend Kelly from Blue Bird Sews publishes her tutorial on baby onesies today to kick off Stashtacular! And don’t forget to enter to win a $25 gift certificate to 1Choice4Quilting too! Yep, all for you! And tutorials to follow tomorrow AND Wednesday – you lucky thing, you!

If you’d like to leave your link, here are the rules:

  • You can link anything you’ve created – an etsy shop, blog or tutorial, whatever.
  • You can leave up to 2 links
  • Please visit at least one other link and comment!
  • I’ll be featuring a few on the blog on Feature Friday
  • You are welcome to add my party button to your blog, but you don’t have to!

I’d also like to ask you a question. I’m thinking about hosting a quilting bee, Sew Bee Blissful. It would be for a year, so I’d need 10-11 totally dependable people to do it with me. Is anyone interested? I’d like to donate my month’s quilt to Linus Quilts, a UK charity which provides donated quilts to kids who’ve had bad injuries, but donation to charity isn’t mandatory. I just thought maybe others would like to help me make a charity quilt. :) Someday I hope to do an international charity bee, but I need to do more research and make more contacts, I think.

Anyway, if you’d like more info, visit the Sew Bee Blissful Flickr page, or email me at jenna (at) sewhappygeek.co.uk
Now go get in on that 1Choice4Quilting giveaway!

Manic Monday Linky Party #20

Did you all have a good weekend? I guess most of you are still having a good weekend celebrating the 4th. Not surprisingly we don’t celebrate the 4th of July here in the UK, but I have had Americans ask me if we do. (What do they think it’s a celebration of?)

Saturday I was a steward at the Romsey Quilter’s Exhibition in the Abbey. Everyone was so nice and didn’t mind my stupid questions at all. On Sunday, Buzz, Savi and I went to the Hat Fair in Winchester and saw the jugglers and other performers. Buzz got to play with his diabolos a bit and juggle while I sewed hexies. I’m not too good at juggling so I tend to do more sedate things like shop and sew. But I did buy fudge! Does that count for anything?

StashtacularI’d also like to remind you about Stashtacular!, which will be starting in only 1 week. I have a poop ton of fabric to swap, so any of you in the UK/EU, get on over to the Flickr page and start posting your fabric pics to swap. You can start posting them in to me whenever you want – and you can choose to post them internationally as we’ve got 2 swaps running simultaneously. Also up: PRIZES. 3 TUTORIALS PER WEEK. LOTS O’ FUN! My friends Stephanie from Spontaneous Threads and Kelly from Blue Bird Sews are my lovely co-hosts and let me tell you, these two have worked really hard! Go give them some bloggy love! If you have ANY questions or want to swap, email me at jenna (at) sewhappygeek.co.uk

Feature Friday + Would You Like a Sexy Glove?

Last night was a whopper. Miss Geek split the top of her thumb open on a knife and it seemed like forever till it stopped bleeding. I was starting to get a little frightened, but then it seemed to calm down enough for us to put a plaster (band-aid) on it.

Problem: We have one plaster in the box, one of those little ones which is only useful for tiny paper cuts. So I drove up to the shop and bought all they had. Which wasn’t much, but we got it covered up.

Next Problem: How will she take a shower? Answer: She sat on a stool in the shower and I washed her hair and helped her get clean. Something I haven’t done in aaaaages! But we had to protect her tape-and-plaster dressing, so this is what we came up with:

© Copyright, J C Excell 2011

The very latest in shower wear, so you can look like one of the Jackson clan while getting clean! If anyone would like one, they’re only £20 each and I’ll post it out to you pronto. You don’t want to miss out – what if someone saw you in the shower without your Sexy Glove? They’d be all like, ‘Oh, well, she can’t be that cool if she’s not wearing a Sexy Glove’ and you’ll be all like, ‘I promise I’ve ordered one from Jenna and it will arrive any day! I AM COOL, DAMMIT!’

Ahem. Sorry for that. On with the features!

The most popular ones this week:

You guys seemed well intrigued by Melissa from Love Affair With My Brother’s fabric organisation – I wish I had that much room to store fabric!

Regena of The Distracted Domestic made this bra bag out of bra fabric – I love meta-accessories! Please, please, can we have a tutorial Regena? You’re so good at sewing, I know it’d be awesome! Seriously guys, go check out her blog!

The always adorable Cindy at Fluffy Sheep Quilting did a post about washing batiks before sewing with them. Looking at what she’s got there confirms my suspicion that the US has way better variety than we do here.

And Suburbs Mama wrote a tutorial for an Ipad pouch – I guess I need to get an iPad before I make one. Sigh.

And Pomona of Little Cottage Comforts shared a tutorial for making a basket liner! So cute :)

Thank you so much to everyone who linked up! I’ve got to dash off to an appointment now. If you’ve been featured and you want a button:

Mini-Giveaway Winner and Feature Friday

Thank you to all 30 people who read yesterday’s post all the way through and commented to test my new commenting facilities! I’m still tweaking it, but it looks like it’s doing a fairly good job – only a couple of people got erroneously sent to the ‘spam’ folder.

The winner was Debbe from Pieces to Love, and I’ve sent her an email already. I really love my free WordPress plug-in that allows me to decide which posts are contests and how many random winners I want. At the touch of a button it does all the random work for me.

And you’ll be wanting to come back next week because the Follower Giveaway will start – I have decided to include genuine Cadbury’s chocolate and fabric in this one as those are my two favourite things.

So here are the week’s features:

Lindsey from Craft Buds shared how to sew reusable sandwich bags which look quite useful.

Karen from Sew Much 2 Luv shared a tutorial for these little zipper pouches that look like they’d make brilliant pencil cases. (Is the UK the only country that requires school kids to have pencil cases? We go through at least 2 per year.)

Felicity of Felicity Quilts made this Helen Keller quote quilt as part of the Kona Solids challenge – isn’t is lovely?!

My lovely blog friend Bonnie of Wonderfully Awkward wrote a tutorial for this wristlet with a secret zipper pocket.

And you guys have to check out Zombie Leah’s tutorial for painting with yarn – it would be a brilliant activity to do with your kids!

Suburbs Mama shared a tutorial for this easy elasticated waist knit skirt that takes way less than an hour to sew!

Well, that’s all the time I have! Gotta go write tutorials now,

Manic Monday Linky #16 and My Secret Obsession!

Hello! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We did, and I’ll post a few pics of our activities on Wednesday.

****Manic Monday Linky Party is below this post, so if you don’t want to know my geeky side, scroll down now. I honestly won’t be offended!*****

I’m linking this up to verykerryberry’s ‘Secret Obsessions’ linky list. The aim is to share a bit of myself with you that doesn’t have anything to do with sewing.

You know how the name of the blog/site is Sew Happy Geek? Well, I’m not just a geek about sewing; I’m a geek about LOADS of other stuff too. One of them is history. Specifically, English royal history, especially the Tudors and Stuarts. It began with an obsession with Elizabeth I. In fact, I own over 60 biographies of Elizabeth I!

I also own a lot of books on other monarchs and high politics, so many that I have to stack them in two deep. I don’t buy books very often anymore because I’d rather spend the money on fabric. But for a few years, I gobbled up every Tudor and Stuart book I could find! I probably have well over 200 in total! Eeek!

That’s only one bookcase – there are FIVE in the living room, all filled up two deep with history, criminal psychology, forensic anthropology, graphic novels and sci fi, my extensive fiction collection and a collection of books on bipolar disorder. I really meant it when I told you I’m a geek!!

Manic Monday Linky Party #15

I am hard at work on the ‘Protect Your Blog’ series – I’ve discovered it’s a bit too long to have one tutorial, so I’ll do two or three so we can cover all the bases. But since every post should have at least one picture, here’s a pretty quilt I shot while at the Malvern Quilt Show with Romsey Quilters:

Fata Morgana, by Ann Taylor and Gisela Banbury, from Malvern Quilt Show 2011, photo copyright J C Excell. This quilt won a few awards in the Log Cabin category and is even more impressive in real life.

And I’d also like to send some congratulations to my friend Stephanie of Spontaneous Threads, whose sewing machine cover made it all the way to Fat Quarterly!! Awesome!
