PLAY Mini Quilt Competition

PLAY! Pick A Card, Any Card! Yep, that’s right. It’s a mini-quilt contest with LOADS of prizes, and it’s based on your quilty interpretation of an ordinary playing card. It can be any card found in a standard deck of cards. 8 of Clubs, Queen of Hearts, 5 of Diamonds, anything!

Important: We’ve extended the competition by one week (28th May) while I recover from double knee arthroscopy. So you’ve got time to whip up a mini quilt! :)

Important Details: You need to join the Pick A Card Flickr group and start adding your photos. You can add anything you like; photos of sketches are welcome, and of course photos of fabrics and WIPs!

I have a TON of fabulous prizes you can win with your Mini Quilt:

Best in Show - Fat Quarter Shop – $75 gift certificate Judged by: Melissa of SewBitterSweet Designs

Most Original – Fat Quarter Shop  – $35 gift certificate Judged by Melissa of SewBitterSweet Designs

Most Humorous – Fat Quarter Shop – $35 gift certificate Judged by Katy of I’m A Ginger Monkey

Most Popular (through a Linky voting contest) – Fat Quarter Shop – $35 gift certificate

There will also be Lucky Dip prizes, chosen by a random number generator:

Julie of Intrepid Thread is giving away a $25 gift certificate!

Natasha from Skye Reve Fabrics is giving away a $20 gift certificate!

Randi from Fresh Squeezed Fabrics is giving away a $25 gift certificate!

Here’s how it works: You make a mini quilt depicting ONE card in a standard deck of playing cards. Size guidelines are: anything from 10″ by 10″ to 24″ by 24″ and everything in between.

The quilt must be at least 2 layers. It can be appliqued, pieced traditionally, foundation pieced, whatever. As long as it involves fabric and quilting (ie isn’t a painting), it’s fine! You can be as surreal as you want in depicting your chosen card. If you have an idea but you aren’t quite sure it’ll work, email me: jenna (at)

The competition runs from 23 April to 28 May 2012, but of course you can start planning and chatting earlier in the Flickr group!

Midnight (GMT) Monday 28 May is the last day to enter your completed quilt into the Flickr group for consideration by the judge(s).

There will also be a linky party which you can link up to (flickr pics are okay here – you don’t need a blog!) for the Most Popular prize, which will run until Friday morning 1 June 12 noon GMT. All winners of all awards will be announced on 1 June on my SewHappyGeek blog and in the Flickr group.

oh huraay! i’ll actually have time to finish mine!

i’m so sorry about the reason why though. i’ve helped my grandma through two knee surgeries (on the same darn knee!), and i’m definitely wishing you luck. i can’t imagine doing two at one time, but it’s a great excuse to do some handwork! make sure you pack a little lamp or something in your bag, i’ve learned the hard way that hospital rooms have terrible light for embroidery.
