So this is what I wanted to show you yesterday, but the weather wasn’t cooperative.
Since I started knitting, I have developed this habit of placing projects, along with their raw materials, into plastic zip top bags. This works remarkably well for quilting projects – all the sewn bits and fabric are right there together. However, it’s a little less than satisfactory for knitting projects, the most glaring error being that I also place the knitting needles in the bags as well. Like, how can you not?
This, unfortunately (and predictably), has the effect of my knitting needles swinging to and fro every time I pick up a bag. Sometimes the needle threatens to come out of the project entirely, which if you knit, you know is a freakin’ disaster. So I went traipsing through etsy with a mind to buying some knitting project bags. And while I did find some very nice, very funny ones, I noticed they’re fairly expensive. Especially if you’re like me with at least 2 or 3 knitting projects going on at once.
Since I have a sewing machine (and a tiny bit of skill) I decided ‘Screw it, I’ll make my own’. And I found this super quick, super easy tutorial on Mother Huddle – it says 15 mins, and by God she’s right. In no time I had 3 of them! And although I can’t claim they were free per se, I didn’t have to buy any new fabric or piping cord as I used what I had.
I’m really happy with my drawstring bags. The smaller ones are perfect for squashing up and putting in my backpack. I always travel with a knitting project as one never knows when one will be dying of boredom while out sampling life’s many delights and frustrations.

Hello Jenna, yes I also have a couple of knitting projects on the go and agree about the kneedles. I made a tote bag for my knitting but did not think about a drawstring .I love your Knitting bags and will now add a drawstring to my tote. Thanks Jen

Heh, cunning plan! I might need to get a bag or two made up to take some things to Ireland in a couple of weeks… then again, the US trip in October might be a more realistic deadline 😉

The bags look fantastic. You only have 2 or 3 knitting projects at a time, you are more disiplined than I am. My kids have gotten in the habit of getting me tote bags everytime they are thrift store shopping, so I fill each bag with projects (knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc…). I need to get them to stop getting me bags but I have so many ideas.
